When determination goes beyond, no limitation…
“There are 86,400 seconds in a day. It’s up to you to decide what to do with them.”
This year is my first time watching The Espys. Awards that are presented to athletes for different categories. One of the categories that caught my attention was Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. The Espys was awarded to Kevin Everett, former Buffalo Bills footballer who fought back to make a remarkable recovery from a paralyzing injury. NFL September 2007, he laid on a football field, paralyzed after helmet to helmet hit. Everett sustained a fracture and dislocation of cervical spine (neck). Doctor even said that the ‘life-threatening” injury is likely to leave him permanent nerves impairment. He night not be able to walk again.
“I couldn’t move my arms and legs. I knew it was bad. And I was thinking, wow, I will never be able to move again. On the stretcher, I was trying my hardest to put a thumbs up to my teammates. To let them know I was alright. But I wasn’t alright.”-Kevin Everett
He has go through more than four hours of emergency surgery with eight screws, two rods and a titanium plate to realigned the spine. After two weeks in the ICU, Everett showed remarkable signs of movements and then transferred to rehab facility.
“Nobody thought I would be recovering like this. Just stick with it, fight hard, be positive, don’t give up on anything.“
Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up. “Nothing is impossible” which is why Kansas won NCAA 2008 Basketball by forcing Memphis to the overtime . Celtics won 2008 NBA 4 -2 on Lakers, the first “NBA’s six-game sweep.” Rafael Nadal won Wimbledon 2008 and dethroned five times champion, Roger Federer.
It’s possible to be in UPA Nationals. Yes. Dream big, work hard.
